Hoosiers Helping Homeless Pets will use this page to give you suggestions, ideas and links to other websites to help you place your pet or stray into a new home or the give you ideas so you can keep them. Hoosiers Helping Homeless Pets would like to remind those of you who are trying to place their pet into a new home that when you obtained that pet, you made a commitment to that animal for its entire life. Animals, like people, are not perfect and deserve the chance to remain in your home. Hoosiers Helping Homeless Pets does not have a shelter, rescue or foster program.

Stop and Count to 10 First!
Pets, like children and spouses, can make us very angry. Take a moment, take a deep breath and think before doing something that both you and the pet will regret!
Please do not assume the 'system' is available for your convenience! Take responsibility for your actions!
Before making any snap decisions, please visit with your vet to rule out any medical problems! Spay/Neuter your pet! This eliminates many behavior issues!
Do not dump a cat outdoors! They do not have natural survival skills and must be taught to hunt by their mothers!
Do not take a dog out into the country and dump! They will more than likely get hit by a car, shot by the local farmer, be attacked by wild animals, or even starve!
Seek training and advice from the professionals (vets, trainers, animal welfare personal!)
Also, before you do anything drastic, ask yourself one question: "What am I teaching my children by this action?"
Most of all, if you insist on 'getting rid of' your pet, be honest with the animal welfare staff. Don't add the fluff!! The shelters are full of wonderful pets that need homes. Your pet is not necessarily unique!

Spay/Neuter
Having your pet spay/neutered can eliminate many common behavior issues including dog aggression and biting. Please don’t be part of the problem, be part of the solution and have your pet spay neutered. If you need assistance, please follow this link to the Spay/Neuter Information Page for assistance. Check this link for information on feral/strat cats.

Other Options
Listed here are some other thoughts and suggestions if you still need to place your pet or find a solution for the stray you found:
· If a stray, check with the closest animal control agency or public shelter. If someone has lost a pet, that will be the first place they should look. If your community does not have either one of these services, check with local law enforcement and/or your town officials to report a found pet.
· Check with your local newspapers. Many local publications will let you list animals for little or no fee.
· Please understand that the shelter system is oversaturated with unwanted animals. Try and look at all your options before making a decision, but please do the right thing by your pet and have the same love and respect for them as they do for you. Take responsibility!
· If you feel that the shelter system is your only option, please disclose ALL information about your pet. Do not ‘gloss’ it over or stretch the truth. Disclose everything!
